His name is… Harpoon.
He is a true Kelpie.
Now before I go any further, I feel it is best that I first clarify a few things. There are MANY subspecies of aquatic ponies, many of which have been confused for kelpies and vice versa. I do not have time to list all these sub-species. Instead, I will list the four most prominent kinds of aquatic ponies, and then speak on true kelpies themselves.
1. Oceanic “Kelpies” (Undo saltantium):
I have no idea why this subspecies refer to themselves as “kelpies”, especially given the terrible and unfortunately true reputation that kelpies have. That being said, Oceanic kelpies are the most prevalent and second most advanced aquatic ponies in existence. They have a rich culture of both art and history that rivals their land-dwelling cousins. Ruled by benevolent monarch, they have a great undersea kingdom, and smaller cities in each of the major seas as well as the Great World Ocean itself.
2. Sea Ponies (Mare mannis):
This odd, upright-swimming subspecies of pony, live in shallower waters, close to coasts. Sea ponies are easily at home in both fresh and salt water, and many travel from the oceans and along upstream. Sea ponies are not as….complex as most of the other subspecies, having simple mindsets. However, they are friendly, are famous for their singing, and are quite vigilant. I personally commend them for their efforts in rescuing many beings, pony and non-pony alike who would have otherwise drowned. They are the most recommendable aquatic ponies to be near. Except during their mating season. NEVER go anywhere near sea ponies during mating season.
3. Hippocampi (Hippocampus):
Hippocampi are not a true supspecies, but are actually hybrids of terrestrial and aquatic ponies. All hippocampi have aquatic tails, yet also have strong pony forelegs that can support their wieght out of water with ease. While not entirely at home in either land or water, all hippocampi carry the best traits of both parents, and have the most diverse appearance of all the aquatic pony variants.
4. Deep Ones (Antiquis aqua tenebrosa equis):
These highly enigmatic and vaguely sinister beings are offspring of a pony and….certain beings of ancient ancestry that predates this world and even the three worlds that came before. I shall neither illustrate the basic characteristics of a Deep One, nor shall I show what the other worldly parent may look like. The reason being is that young Deep Ones look like regular ponies, albeit with minor differences. They grow, live, learn and love as any pony does, until they reach maturity, at which they answer the call of the dark waters in distant seas. I believe that how we treat them on land directly affects how they view us under the waves.
And thus you have the four most prominent subspecies of aquatic ponies, which brings us to:
5. (True) Kelpies (Equi demone):
True kelpies, also referred to as Daemokelpies, are not ponies at all, but rather demons in physical equine form. Kelpie body types tend to be lean, and actually somewhat smaller than average adult ponies. However this is deceiving, for Kelpies are quite capable of feats of strength and speed beyond that of ponies, which they use to their advantage. Their demonic nature manifests itself most noticeably in the fact that though their hooves are aligned the same as any pony, their hoof prints face backwards. Also, all kelpies have a number of a unique kind will-o-wisp, who keep watch and serve their master/mistress. These Will-o-wisps, they are…..I’d rather not think about it.
True Kelpies are truly malevolent beings, without pity or remorse. They live to defile and consume those unlucky enough to end up in their domain. They thrive on misery and are truly evil monsters…just as I am a monster, for the deal I made with the kelpie known as Harpoon…
And before I forget, please do not confuse the Pseudokelpies that protect my Redoubt at Lake Kelpie as true kelpies. Though they may have a somewhat similar appearance, my pseudokelpies are NOT demons. For information regarding Pseudokelpies, please the redoubt’s archived journal regarding them at the following location:
